Data sharing

The goal of the HIFIS initiative is to collect data needed to provide the HPS with a portrait of the homelessness issues across Canada, with the ultimate goal of maximizing the impact of the community planning process. As such, all HIFIS 3 users are encouraged to send exports to the HIFIS initiative on a regular basis. For more information, please see the Export Guide.

All HIFIS 3 users sharing data must adhere to the privacy protections and security protocols in the Data Sharing Protocol (DSP).

In use since 2001, the DSP details the requirements for data collection, participation, privacy and security for all shelters and providers of services to the homeless population that are entering data into, or have access to, the HIFIS software. It also outlines the Government of Canada’s responsibilities and obligation to protect data.
